SPECIAL SET OF STAMPS

“EUROMED – HOUSES IN THE MEDITERRANEAN”

The traditional architecture of Greece is an inextricable part of the country’s rich cultural heritage, creating a multi-coloured mosaic of unique characteristics and techniques that vary from place to place.

For this year’s EUROMED series themed “Houses of the Mediterranean”, Hellenic Post (ELTA) presents a small sample of the wealth of Greece’s traditional architecture through a set of four unique stamps for the Greek edition.

The austere stony style of Mani is highlighted through the two-storey traditional homes, the towers and tower houses that are in an architectural category of their own. The towers in Mani in particular are tall, stone-built, multi-storey structures with strong lines and small arched windows.

In the distinct Pelion style of traditional building, one finds the imposing two- and three-story manor houses, built mainly with locally available slate and stone. The lower sections of the mansions are stone and feature small windows and openings, while the upper floors are usually built with a combination of stone and wood and have larger windows. The upper storeys often protrude slightly over the ground floor, creating the “sachnisi” feature typical of Pelion architecture.

Symi’s two- and three-story houses, ochre-coloured with brown windows, colourful doors, red-tiled gable roofs, pebbled courtyards and balconies provide a sample of the architecture seen around the Aegean Sea. Retaining much of the neoclassical character, the houses are quite distinctive with their tiled roofs, pediments, rectangular floor plans and decorative elements.

The folk architecture of the Cycladic Islands is recognisable by the austere geometric shapes and the functionality of the structures. The plain, Cycladic houses are single- or two-story, with an exterior stone stairway, small openings and overhanging wooden balconies called “boudia”. The gleaming white is overwhelming, broken only by the vibrant blue-painted doors, windows and balconies.
