The special EuroMed “Costumes of the Mediterranean” set of stamps from Hellenic Post looks back to tradition and the past.
In showing traditional attire from Xanthi, Anogeia (Crete), Kastellorizo and Lefkada, the stamps wander the country from north to south, depicting the unique and individual culture of each place.
Traditional costumes, as a manifestation of our popular culture and a reflection of its specific characteristics, are an integral part of the particular character of Greece.
At the same time, the theme of “Costumes of the Mediterranean” adds a timely note to the continuity of Greek folklore by highlighting its various manifestations. Indeed, it contributes to the enrichment of our historical heritage not only for today’s generation but also for those of the future.
With respect for the ways and customs of each region, the impressive costumes pictured on the stamps map an extraordinary history that will awaken memories of bygone eras.
With this set of stamps, Hellenic Post pays tribute to Greek tradition and once again, with its finger on the pulse of the nation, shows that it is at the forefront when it comes to countering the oblivion of the past.
The Hellenic Post would like to thank the Benaki Museum (costumes of Lefkada and Xanthi) and the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation (PFF) (costumes of Kastellorizo and Anogeia-Crete), for providing our Organization with photographic material which facilitated the design of the present Series.
